Blinman - SA
Population - 151
The small village of Blinman, although barely more than a ghost of its former self, is one of the treasures of the Flinders Ranges. Copper ore was first found here in 1859 by a shepherd, Robert 'Pegleg' Blinman, and 1862 the mine was working and soon boasted a community of 1500 people. The Great Blinman Mine is one of only a few out of the hundreds of registered mines and prospects in the Flinders Ranges mining history. Worked mainly by Cornish miners the mine was held by several different companies during its almost 50 year history. Now there is very little of the surface workings to show for the man hours put into the mine but a walk around the mine site is worth at least an hour, thanks mainly to the extremely well written informative signs on the mine trail walk.
These days Blinman and the surrounding area is a great place to spend a day or two, relaxing and exploring. In town there are several places of interest, the Wild Lime Cafe and Gallery is worth a visit, the Blinman Hotel has an indoor swimming pool, a friendly bar and a great restaurant, a walk around town may not take long but offers some wonderful photo opportunities, and the Blinman Cemetery is worth a wander around. Also on the south side of town there is a golf course for those golfers with a sense of adventure!
Blinman is only a small town but there are several types of accommodation available in the area including Bed & Breakfast, Farm Stay, Hotel, Camping, Cabins and Caravan Park are available.
