The European History of the Fisherman Islands started with the explorations of John Oxley, the Surveyor-General of New South Wales who a carried out detailed survey of Moreton Bay on Brig Amity in 1823. A Penal colony was established in 1826 and Port entry was restricted to Authorised vessels only.
In the 1850's the Brisbane River Bar made entry and exit to the River very difficult, with low tide levels as low as 1 metre. The Colony of Brisbane was established in 1859 and the need to transport produce out of the port and supplies into the colony lead to the Channel at Fisherman Islands being dredged in the 1860's to allow vessels access. Wharves and Port Facilities were built along the River, mainly along Hamilton Reach. By the late 1960's the wharves had grown to almost capacity, shipping every concievable product.
In 1974 a proposal was put forward to move the Port from the Brisbane River to the Fisherman Islands, where a deep water port Terminus could be built. In 1980 the Fisherman Islands Port Facility was officially opened by the Queensland Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen. In 2004 a 230 hectare expansion plan began to reclaim land at the north eastern end of the Island. This will increase the Port area and its capacity.
