Flinders Ranges - South Australia
The Flinders Ranges are situated in central South Australia, like a backbone to the continent. In fact this is very close to true, the Massive geological feature that the Flinders Ranges are part of is an ancient mountain range formed 450 million years ago, which runs from the southern edge of the Australian continent near Cape Jervis in the south, to well into central Australia and includes the Adelaide Hills. The Flinders Ranges Region covers the area from Melrose and Orrorooin the south, and through Quorn, Hawker, and Leigh Creek, to Lyndhurst in the north. The Flinders Ranges are one of South Australia's favourite outback destinations, popular with bushwalkers, campers, artists and photographers for their multitude of colours; magnificent, rugged scenery and wonderful wildlife and wildflowers. The Flinders Ranges is an Outdoors wonderland with an interesting human history and even more incredible natural history, beautiful nature and a great place to relax and enjoy! Around 3 hours drive north of Adelaide the Southern Flinders Ranges is easy to get to with some other very interesting and scenic area's along the way, including the Mid North and the Clare Valley. The Central Flinders Ranges, including Wilpena Pound are about 4 hours drive north of Adelaide, while Leigh Creek, Iga Warta and Arkaroola are all at least a days drive north, although best approached after spending some days exploring the Southern Ranges.

Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, is a quaint historic town, situated at the base of Mount Remarkable. Quorn in the southern part of the region has a very interesting history, mainly due to the original Ghan Railway, part of which can be travelled on to Port Augusta on the Historic Pichie Richie Railway. Port Augustais the largest centre in the Flinders Ranges Region and serves as a great resupply point befor heading north into the Flinders, north along the Stuart Highway, through the South Australian Outback towards Alice Springs, west to Ceduna/a and the Nullabor, or south west onto Eyre Peninsula.
In the Central Flinders Ranges is Hawker, the main regional cente for the area. To the North of which is Wilpena Pound and the Flinders Ranges National Park. Further North is the historic copper mining town of Blinman.
The Northern Flinders Ranges is possibly the hardest to access, although the roads have improved over the passed several years, much of the area has good graded gravel roads.Leigh Creek is the main centre for the area, while nearby Beltana has become an interesting historic ghost town. Copley has a Bakery that is well regarded for Quandong Pies. East of Copley is Iga Warta run by members of the Adnyamathanha people. Further to the East is the Vulkathana-Gammon Ranges National Park and Arkaroola Resort and Wilderness Sanctuary. Lyndhurst is the gateway to the South AustralianOutback, from here You can travel either northeast to Innaminka and the Corner Country via the Strzelecki Track, or north to Maree and onto the Oodnadatta Track or the Birdsville Track.
