There are many Museums around Australia, and they vary from the large Government backed organisations usually found in State Capitals to the small, Volunteer run Historical Societies in country areas or city suburbs. Most major towns have at least one museum, with displays about the local area.

Museums can give a very good insight into the history of a region You are visiting, they often have displays of historical photographs and pictures of the local area as it developed, displays of historical artefacts from the local area, natural history displays showing the plants, animals, minerals, geology and fossils of the region. Most museums and historical displays have managed to gain an insight into the pre European history of their area and often have very comprehensive displays of information regarding the local indigenous culture, these are a perfect opportunity to gain an understanding of the effect that colonisation has had on the environment and on the original inhabitants.
