Tamborine Mountain

Tamborine Mountain is situated in the hinterland inland from the Gold Coast. The Tamborine Mountain plateau has a subtropical to temperate climate and is 550 metres above sea level. The plateau is 4 kilometres wide by 8 kilometres long. It was formed 22 million years ago as a lava flow from the Mount Warning Volcano. Since 1908 the area has had a strong nature conservation attitude, making it somewhat of a flora and fauna sanctuary. On the plateau it is quite common to see Alberts Lyrebirds, scrub turkeys, Lorikeets, bower birds and whip birds; platypus still live in the mountain creeks; fireflies glow in the rainforest at night and glow-worms can be seen.

Some of the Irish immigrants who arrived in the district in 1862 ventured up onto the plateau in search of timber such as cedar and beech. These families applied for leases on the plateau when selection was allowed in 1875. It was at this time that the Plateau became known as Tamborine Mountain, "Tamborine" is believed to be an aborginal word meaning "a place of yams" refering to an area near the Albert River.
